A Clean Start is a Great Start
The steps and tips below are meant to help your property look better and create a safer environment for your family and guests.
1. Walk around
Although it sounds extremely simple, this is arguably the most important.
Rather than just wandering around the yard getting your 10k steps in, you will be inspecting the exterior of your home. Look for problems that may already exist and potential issues that may arise.
It can be something as simple as downspout that needs redirecting or you could find black streaks or even moss on your roof. Like most homeowners our home is our biggest investment so we want to find this issues as early as possible.
Make sure to have a pen and paper ready to create a list of “must fix issues & potential issues.”
2. Top to bottom
We recommend starting from top to bottom. Work your way from the roof all the way to the landscaping surrounding your home.
Depending on the size of your house, you may need a ladder to complete this task. (at least need a way to visibly inspect the roof, fascia & gutters) Once you visibly inspect your roof for streaking, moss and made sure integrity has been maintained you can move on to the gutters.
Gutters can be easily overlooked and put off until a later date but this decision can lead to more headaches. A simple check to make sure gutters are clear and flowing properly can save you from interior water damage and having to spend thousands to repair.

3. Windows & doors sealed?
Inflation? What’s that, right? If you’re like me and you love to save a dollar this one is for you!
Another simple but overlooked part of being a homeowner is making sure our home is properly sealed. Make sure windows & doors close properly & no broken or cracked windows.
Checking windows and door seals and trim can help prevent water damage and higher heating bills. Things happen and sometimes windows are left unlocked by accident, so this plays into the safety factor as well.
4. Declutter
The spot, you know the spot…
The spot where everyone throws all of there junk, shoes, backpacks, used soccer socks from November & the occasional hand tool. Don’t worry every family has one of these spots. Most people think of this spot on the interior of your home in the garage, laundry or mudroom, but the same spots exist on the exterior of your home.
These spots, most of the time of composed of “maybe I should or shouldn’t keep items” like outdated decorations, floor pots, the broken rake from 2 years ago and so on. Now, this is up to your personal discretion but don’t keep everything, go through it, you may not need the item but someone else could benefit from it.
You could sell or donate items and throw out anything that’s not worth keeping. Getting rid of the eye sore could increase your curb appeal instantly.
5. Organize
Once you’ve got the eye sore out of sight, it’s time to make sure that the exterior of our home is as organized as the inside.
From the landscaping, patio furniture to the garden tools each item should have a place. Landscaping this time of the year is fairly simple because not many weeds are growing.
The patio can be another story this time of year just because it may not be used as much. Organizing patio, porches, decks and any social area can’t be neglected because it’s colder out.
Yes, the passersby can still see the garden tools and pile of shoes you have on the front porch.
6. Make a plan
If any issues were found as “must fix” during the walk around a plan needs to be made to have the issue resolved. Whether its a DIY project or if you need a professional don’t wait for the issue to just go away.
We are a professional exterior cleaning company and we’re here to help! Whether it’s a question about your own DIY project or you need our services feel free to reach out.
7. Change something up
This one is just something fun…
Each year my wife and I like to pick something new to do to the exterior of our home. I’m not talking about anything extravagant but just something different. Like setting up a raised bed for vegetables you like to eat, this doesn’t have to be large, we’ve grown plants in smaller pots by themselves.
Get creative & have fun!
